If this book wasn't a cliff hanger, I would have given it two stars. The beginning of this book was really good. Hot professor is attracted to a student. I know, it's forbidden, and that is what made me purchase the book in the first place. However, once I purchased the book and continued past the third chapter, the book read like every other book I have purchased lately. It just read like the same old thing. I'm sick of the same formula. I want romance and some sex. Not just sex, sex, sex. Too many books I've read are the same thing. If this book would have been a "stand alone," book, I probably would have given it two stars, but since it was a cliffhanger, I gave it one star. Don't waste your money to buy the second. It's the same old story, and there are too many good books out there that are too good that you will want to purchase.Product details

I REALLY liked this book! I have read several romance books about teacher/student or young woman/older wealthy man relationships that they sometimes blend together. Yet I found Shuttered Affections to be refreshing.
While Julia is younger than Aiden, she isn't portrayed as a naive young woman overwhelmed by the attentions of an older man. Yes, she is overwhelmed by Aiden, but it is because of her intense physical reaction to him - something she never expected to feel for anyone again due to the actions of her previous boyfriend. Julia definitely has her moments of vulnerability and the self-esteem issues so many woman face at some point in their lives, but she is an otherwise strong independent woman working hard to achieve her goals.
Aiden. What can I say about Aiden? Of course, he's hot, intense, and wealthy - which you don't get an understanding of until the end of the book. He also has a sensitive side that I haven't seen in many of the rich alpha male characters. His insecurities around Julia are refreshing. Now for the icing on the cake, he's a twin! Yes ladies, there are 2 of these gorgeous hunks!
I think what I enjoyed most about Shuttered Affections is that while there is a lot going on in a short time frame, the relationship between Julia and Aiden is a slow seduction. They don't actually have sex until about 80% into the book, but the moments of intimacy before that are HOT! I felt seduced by Aiden and loved the anticipation that built as I read the book.
What I did not like about the book was the abrupt ending. It was not a cliffhanger ... it just stopped. Fortunately, I have the second book and can begin it immediately. Otherwise, the ending would have really pissed me off. I understand books in sequels are supposed to leave you hanging, but this one did not. It just stopped with no warning and if it weren't for the fact that it said "The end of book one" I would have thought there was something wrong with my download. Leave me hanging, don't slam the door in my face.
Ms. Folsom has written a wonderfully seductive book and I am looking forward to reading the sequel.

This book, was an amazing read, full of suspense, and packed full of themes that most authors shy away from, or simply get it wrong. Rene Folsom did not shy away from student/teacher love, or away from past relationship issues (with family and significant others); and I must state she did an amazing job of keeping me on my seat wanting to know what happens next!
This book was very hard to put down because of what was stated above, and the style it was written in. I really enjoyed at the beginning of each chapter was a clip from the chapter (it was like a peek of what was going to happen in this chapter).
Juilana has settled down in a new town, taking college courses, and trying to start over. Just when she feels she has reached a place she can stay, she has an unexpected (and comical) encounter with a man...she later finds out is her professor, Aiden Stone.
This encounter leads to a quick magnetic attraction, that neither can help, and Juilana struggles with the emotions she is feeling. The attraction is what makes this book hard to put down! I was on my seat thinking they would get together instantly! I applaud the author at building emotions of this relationship (they didn't just hop into bed at first encounter).
BUT...just as soon as Juilana falls for Aiden, her past comes back to haunt her. This part of the story is suspenseful, and will provoke emotions! I wanted to jump into the book, hunt down her ex and family, and yell at them for their wrongs!
The end of this book...LEADS TO ANOTHER BOOK! I had to buy it, and definetly recommend it! Rene touches onto another fragile subject to write about, and does another amazing job!
